Smoothies are an awesome snack. They’re great for getting lots of fruit into your diet without a lot of fuss, grabbing those vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, curbing cravings and getting an energy boost. They’re the dieters best friend, the health and fitness freaks true love and the busy man’s mistress. And if you get a little cunning, they’re easy on your wallet as well as your tastebuds.

Here are some of my favourite combinations

3 Steps to improving your day (#5)

Friday, January 22nd, 2010
  1. Dig out some art stuff. Paints, colouring pencils, glitter, whatever you’ve got lying around
  2. Start making a picture, or maybe a sculpture, something like that, focus on tapping into your emotions, whatever’s on your mind, write stuff if you want, slap paint on any old how, whatever works for you.
  3. Focus not on creating anything specific, just trust your hands and your gut and see where it leads. You aren’t aiming to make a masterpiece, you’re giving your soul a channel. The art could be in the movement of your hands, in the feeling you get from finger painting, it could be in the in the finished product. The point is to focus on finding it and unwinding. Whatever it comes out like, be proud of yourself, it takes courage to express yourself, and sometimes it doesn’t make sense. Self expression is incredibly important, and you’re doing this just for you, so enjoy it.

Simple Pleasures

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Small pleasures are good for us. Little bubbles of soul food amidst the day. They help moderate stress, improve our overall health and tend to make us a little nicer, they can also provide us with the odd little insight.

Animals

Kidnapping the cat for a cuddle always makes me feel better. Sitting with the rabbits for a few minutes and watching them demolish silverbeet and kale is surprisingly calming – and I’ve known people who were uninterested in rabbits before to have found just watching them very interesting and relaxing. A cuddle with my horses is always beneficial, and anyone who has a horse will know how good they smell.

6 ways to relax and recharge at work

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

In todays (dare I say it) fast paced world, too many people work too many hours, skip lunch, skip dinner, skip breakfast and probably skip sleep in between. Work follows you home like a large angry dog that holds the keys to your livelihood, and somehow we become quivering, electrified balls of stress.

Yeah, that sucks.

There’s lots of great information out there about the reasons for lowering your stress levels, from a personal and a business perspective – you need fewer sick days, you’re more productive, easier to work with, deal with customers and other associates better, your homelife and your health improves and your significant other doesn’t recoil in horror when a pale zombie crawls into bed at 2am, and spends the night screaming that the Jipson account was done two weeks ago, damnit.

The most effective way to lower your stress levels would be an already lifestyle change, eat right, exercise, work a little less, segment your time and leave work outside of certain places, however that’s something that you’ll have to decide to do as and when you’re ready/having enough heart attacks.

So, in the meantime, here are a few ideas to help lower your stress levels during your work day.

  1. Go out into the garden, or somewhere with flowers and such
  2. Select one or two nice flowers, maybe some ferns and fronds, and make a little posy for yourself
  3. Put the flowers in water somewhere near where you’ll be at work or at home, and look at them whenever you need a little bit of colour in your life.

Baked beans

These are an old staple, but you can jazz them up with a little bit of milk or yoghurt (a tablespoon or so while it’s cooking), or some chopped onions, chives, etc. Try adding red kidney beans and lentils if you like, or capsicum and tomato. If you like it hot, add a little paprika.

3 steps for improving your day (#3)

Thursday, November 19th, 2009
  1. Find a spot somewhere outside, or in a place that is peaceful. Parks, libraries, gardens, art galleries are all good.
  2. Sit down and make yourself comfortable and starting with one of your senses, and study every part of your surroundings. Notice lines and shapes and sounds, and aspects about them, are the colours bright or pale? Are the sounds sharp and loud? Is the ground or floor rough or smooth? Notice the way the light hits things, how the sound echoes and bounces, every single detail, one by one. Drink in your surroundings.
  3. When you’re ready, turn your attention to your body, and slowly stretch and appreciate each part of it, then take a few deep breaths, and continue with  your day.

3 steps for improving your day (#2)

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009
  1. Sit back and think about nice or deserving people. It could be a neighbor, a colleague, some one you barely know. Just some one who needs or deserves something nice done for them.
  2. Plan a small surprise for them. Maybe you’re famous for your chocolate cake, or you have a garden full of extra vegetables, or your kid has toys they no longer need. Anything at all, maybe a block of chocolate, a card, even just a hello in the street, or invite them for a coffee. Help with their car or computer. Anything at all.
  3. Go and do the good deed, and enjoy the warm feeling you get from it.

3 steps for improving your day (#1)

Monday, November 16th, 2009
  1. Sit back in your chair, take some deep breaths, and slowly take stock of your body, then your surroundings. Go through every sensation, every little detail one by one. Just notice them, describe them to yourself, and then let them drift away.
  2. When you’re nice and relaxed, get a pen and paper, and write down 10 things about yourself that you like. Do more if you can, but 10 should be the goal. It can be anything, what you do, how you do it, the way you look, the way you dress, what you’ve achieved. Anything at all so long as it’s positive.
  3. Pick out the top three, and then make a plan to do something to reward each one. Something small and simple that makes you feel good.

12 quick tips for handling stress

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Stress has it’s place in life, it can act as a motivator, it can tell us where we’re going wrong and what doesn’t work for us, but we’ve overdone it. We’ve overdone it like George Lucas overdid Star wars merchandising, or Microsoft overdid sucking-at-making-programs. Stress causes a build of all kinds of nasty toxins, it affects appetite, sleep and immunity, it can cause all kinds of health problems. For some people that means they can’t eat when they’re stressed, for others it means jumping at every sound, being more irritable, it causes physical pain in more cases than you’d think, for example muscle tension, or stomach pain.

The ideas in this article are not designed to cure stress, there will always be some stress in life, and to sort out major stress you need to look at it’s causes and how to handle them, or ditch them completely. These are ideas you can use to relax now and then. Some are cheap or free, others are not, some are quick, some are slow, some will work for you and others won’t.
